Biography
Mal has established and operated an IT solutions business called UtiliSolutions. This business provides IT system reviews, strategy development and IT Solutions delivery (including product development, integration and implementation) for energy markets. Clients to date have included generation, transmission, energy retailing, trading and banking sector operations. UtiliSolutions developed a comprehensive electricity commodity trading software package, incorporating dynamic risk management quantification and reporting tools and is marketing these to clients in the energy industry.
Mal also established MCAA Consulting in order to pursue consulting opportunities in the energy sector. This followed numerous unsolicited approaches from various industry participants to provide strategic, tactical and operational consulting advice. MCAA Consulting has carried out numerous assignments including work for many different large electricity generation businesses, a number of the largest energy retailers in Australia, two of Australia’s largest banks, a variety of renewable energy project proponents in Australia, energy sector regulators, large end use customers and a financial markets advisory body. Sub-consulting services have been provided to some of the largest consulting groups in Australia including KPMG, Accenture and PB Associates. On behalf of the Australian Financial Markets Association, Mal has lectured extensively to major energy industry and financial participants on the operation of energy markets and their interaction with Financial Markets. Mal has had extensive involvement in the development of renewable and low emission energy projects including wind, waste gas and waste heat generation. With both Engineering and business qualifications and experience Mal has been able to co-ordinate and advise on technical and commercial aspects of a number of projects over the last 4 years, including the development of power purchase agreements. He has assisted with green and emissions trading aspects of these projects and has an in depth knowledge of global carbon markets and emissions trading activities as well as global energy prices. More recently Mal has been operating as Chief Executive of a start-up company focussing on Chinese renewable and low emission power generation technology and projects. Prior to this, he developed business plans for a global renewable energy company operating out of London and negotiated technology licences for a listed Australian company. This recent work has involved extensive liaisons and the establishment of relationships and marketing/licensing channels in the United Kingdom, Germany, USA, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Pakistan. Mal has worked for some very large organisations including Westpac, Commonwealth and ANZ banks.

In the course of carrying out his consultancy work Mal has been exposed to an extensive range of business operations both within and outside the energy industry and experience in dealing with such a broad range of issues and customers has assisted him to further develop an already very diverse range of business and analytic skills. Liaising with such a varied client base has also required Mal to be very adaptable in working with a broad range of management styles. He has also had extensive executive management experience in a number of large utilities.
